How to approach it
(please read
disclaimer)
Step 1: Be prepared to switch providers even if you
don't intend to.
(Your ISP won't end your contract unless you
insist on it, because they like your money)
Step 2: In order to switch, you will need something
called a MAC code and you will need to have been with
your provider longer than the minimum contract period you
signed up for. A MAC code enables your broadband connection to
be transferred to another company and this process takes
anything from a few minutes to a couple of hours in most cases.
To get your MAC code visit your ISP's website via the links
below. Before you do this, however, read on:
Step 3: You should take a look at other providers to see
what you would get if you switched to them. Make a note if the
various deals on offer. This gives you something to negotiate
with. You can find out what is available
here or
here
Step 4: You
will need the phone number of your ISP to request your MAC
code.
You can get the
number this from
this page
Step 5: Phone your ISP to request a MAC code -
you should expect them to try and dissuade you from doing this
by making the process cumbersome in the first instance. I was
put on hold three times before I got through to the right
person. It is worth persevering with though. When you call
them, be clear what you intend to say and don't be afraid of
leaving silent pauses in the conversation. Let them make all
the effort.
The conversation might go something like this...
